Here is a story about mental illness shared by Amanda Leventhal, who, as a teen suffered anxiety and depression as a high functioning teenage. Actually, her psychiatrist told her that it was “teens like her that scare me the most.” These teens are the overachievers. They are in the AP classes, in all of the activities and general overscheduled. They are the ones that others would say are living their dream and the perfect life.
In fact, it is so many of our high functioning adolescents for whom we should be most vigilant. We need to recognize that mental illness comes in many colors and shades, affecting teens very differently. Amanda writes that until we adjust our perception of what mental illness looks like, it will often be overlooked perhaps until it is too late.
Teen suicide statistics are alarming. What so often makes teen suicide so unimaginable is that we did not see the signs of trouble.
