College Tours

The college tour might not yield the intended result writes author Erica Reischer.

In her recent New York Times article, she suggests that the college tour might not be the best way for a student to determine which college to attend.  To that, we say “Here, Here!”    Visiting a college is far from being a student there. All too often, never having experienced college, students will make their decision based upon what they imagine the school will be like for them.  Author Reischer says imagination is inherently flawed siting several good examples of how students while touring a college might incorrectly fill in some blanks.

In our experience, college tours will focus on the lesser important conditions such as the social life and meals and less on the academics.   This article makes a good case for getting a student to focus on his or her reasons for going to college and less on what might be gathered on a tour.
