A New Lens

As parents, we love our kids and would do anything for them, even when they push us to our limit. Nevertheless, many of us have found ourselves thinking, “I’d like to strangle them.” If you've felt that, you're not alone.

But perhaps we are spending too much time trying to “fix” children who are not broken. Maybe we are seeing them through a lens of compliance and expectation, reading behavior at face value and responding to what we see.

But what if the behavior isn’t the problem?

Maybe your child isn’t giving you a hard time; maybe your child is having a hard time. What if we’ve been looking through the wrong lens? Perhaps there is a better lens through which you might see your child.

As a family coach, educational consultant, and therapist, my role is not to “fix” kids—it’s to help parents shift their focus, see their child differently, and grow intensely curious about the origin of the behavior. Through this new lens, behavior ceases being the problem and becomes the information.

Neuropsychological testing is one of the best ways to understand how your child’s brain works. Instead of determining limitations, testing can be an effective way to understand how your child’s brain acquires, processes, and stores information. We can learn what causes their “electrical system” to “short circuit.” Read through the old lens, testing can be interpreted as a list of what’s wrong; however, used as a “user manual,” it can help us see when a child is overloaded—pushed to process information in a way their brain isn’t yet wired to receive. This “short circuiting” results in meltdowns, defiance, and other behaviors we find ourselves reacting to. Imagine how relieved your child might be when they feel understood rather than simply managed.

Let us partner with you to demystify testing, help you embrace it as the valuable tool it is, and see your child through a new lens.

Once we change how we see our children, we change how they see themselves.
